Created by the Stand4Kind team in partnership with former professional baseball player Dr. Mark Simmons, this 7 Zone series aims to equip student athletes with essential knowledge and strategies for mental fitness, both on and off the field. A progression of lessons, each focuses on positive character traits, guiding athletes to build self-awareness and coping skills so they may lead with integrity and confidence.
Lessons include:
- 15-20 minute presentation grounded in sports psychology and research
- facilitator guide
- a word from Dr. Simmons
- culminating low to no prep reflection pages- S4kZones Playbook
Lessons may be presented by the team coaches, school counselor or Stand4Kind Athlete Outreach Presenter.
Mental Fitness- Learning to Lead from Within
Data shows that up to 35% of elite athletes suffer from a mental health crisis, which may manifest as stress, eating disorders, burnout, depression, or anxiety. Additionally, one study by the National Athletic Trainers Association found that “many student-athletes report higher levels of negative emotional states than their non-student-athlete peers.”
By practicing the seven “Zones” of mental fitness, you will learn to flex your brain in ways that will help to hone your leadership skills and cope with the stressors and pressure of performing at a high level.
Zone 1: Self-Worth
Athletes identify their values and external influences, while assessing whether their needs for success as student athletes are being fulfilled.
Zone 2: Accountability and Growth Mindset
Athletes explore owning their actions and behaviors with a growth mindset.
Zone 3: Mental Resistance and Tension
Athletes learn how to overcome resistance and tension using coping skills such as self-talk and mental warm-ups.
Zone 4: Compassion in Action
Athletes learn to recognize common thinking traps that increase stress and self-blame in sports and strategies to respond with self-compassion and empathy.
Zone 5: Pressure and Expectations
Athletes explore how reaching to meet expectations can cause pressure, understand how it affects them and practice tools to maintain balance and mental fitness.
Zone 6: Gratitude and Forgiveness
Athletes explore the power of gratitude and forgiveness and how they both free up mental space, but holding on to mistakes, and frustration keeps them stuck in the past.
